Registered is not licensed: what 5,065 matched Florida records say
An NPI number is easy to get. A state license is not. We matched 5,065 Florida agency records to their NPI filings and compared the dates.
| Segment | Median NPI vs license | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Home health agencies | NPI 112 days before | 62.3% filed NPI first |
| Non-medical (homemaker, companion) | -12 days | NPI usually after the license |

For home health, an NPI shows up months before the agency may operate. A list built on NPI dates will reach agencies that cannot yet take clients, and some that never will.
For non-medical agencies the order flips. The NPI comes after. An NPI list finds them late.
Registered is paperwork. Licensed is permission. The license date is the one that matters. See how we use it on the methodology page, or read Before the license.
